900 Pedigreed Cats from Around the World to Turn Metro Area into "Catlanta" During Largest Cat Show in the Western Hemisphere
The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) has selected Atlanta as the host of the 2008 CFA International Cat Show. The largest cat show in the Western Hemisphere will showcase the world's finest pedigreed felines at the Georgia International Convention Center from Nov. 21- 23, 2008. This event will feature 900 pedigreed cats from around the world competing in several categories, including the prestigious "Best Cat in Show."
This one-of-a-kind three-day show is open to the public and gives attendees an opportunity to experience a memorable and family-friendly experience in the heart of Atlanta. In addition to being able to view the formal judging competition and award ceremonies, cat lovers will have easy access to the finest selection of high-end cat-related products and advice from hundreds of anticipated exhibitors.
Highlights from the upcoming CFA show include:
- CFA Feline Agility Competition - which will highlight the grace, athleticism and curiosity which makes cats so much fun to watch in action
- Breed Showcase - where a CFA judge will handle 18 to 20 CFA breeds-including a mixture of retired show cats and kittens-and answer questions from curious cat lovers
"We're extremely excited to bring this unique showcase of the world's finest pedigreed felines to the heart of the southeast," said Allene Tartaglia, CFA Executive Director. "This is the perfect venue to give participants from around the world an opportunity to share their passion for these fantastic felines in a comfortable and easily-accessible location. In addition to the exciting judging competition, the 2008 CFA International Cat Show will give cat lovers of all types an opportunity to discover a wide array of cat-related products and services-all in one convenient place."
The show, which will be marking its 20th anniversary this year, will be making its first appearance in Atlanta since 1997. This is also the first time in eleven years the show has been east of the Mississippi River.
Catlanta
Leading up to the official event period, special activities will be conducted in Atlanta to welcome the hundreds of participants to "Catlanta." In addition, there will be organized events to educate the general public about pedigreed breeds and household cats, and provide useful information on responsible cat ownership and proper care.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host this prestigious, world-class event in Atlanta," said Jo Ann Haden-Miller, Director of Cultural & Heritage Marketing for the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We hope attendees of the 2008 CFA International Cat Show take full advantage of Atlanta's legendary southern hospitality as we welcome cat lovers and their wonderful companions from around the world. We look forward to working with the CFA to put together a spectacular show."
CFA recognizes 40 breeds of pedigreed cats, and 900 cats are expected to attend the show. Among the breeds that may be found at the show are the very popular and easily-recognized Persian and Siamese, as well as the impressive Maine Coon, the elegant Cornish Rex, the long and lean Oriental and unique hairless Sphynx.
The judging panel will truly be world-class, with judges from across the United States joined by participants from around the world, including Europe and Asia, who will have their entries evaluated by this panel of experts in a number of categories, and judged according to a written standard for its breed. A breed standard is precise enough to allow judges to evaluate cats accurately, and flexible enough to leave room for differences in interpretation between judges.

To catch a cat and a kid together in a photograph is the ultimate in cuteness and the 122 entries in our photo contest did just that! Entries were submitted from 27 US states and 4 Canadian provinces, each of which proved that cats and kids do indeed have a special relationship.
The photo contest winners were announced at the CFA-Iams Cat Championship show held at Madison Square Garden, New York City, on October 19.

Finding A Million Pets a Home in Time for the Holidays
Iams, Helen Woodward Animal Center, and 3,000 participating pet adoptions centers are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Iams Home 4 the Holidays with a god of finding homes for one-million orphaned pets. Now one of the world's most successful pet adoption drives, Iams Homes 4 the Holidays began as a vision to celebrating the season of giving by hope to pets without permanent homes or families.
In the fall of 2009, Mike Arms made a life-changing move from the East Coast to Southern California. He was the new president of Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Sante Fe. Mike had worked in animal welfare since 1969, working for the ASPCA and North Shore Animal League (both in New York). Spending 30 years in animal welfare provided Mike with significant insight into why millions of orphaned pets (pets in need of a permanent home) were being killed each year in the United States.
Mike focused his attention toward one insight in particular. Many pet adoption organizations were closing their doors during the holiday season because they did not want to advocate pets as gifts. These organizations claimed that all pet acquisitions during the holidays were impulse and the pets would end up back in the shelters in a matter of time. Mike did not see it that way.
Mike Arms knew people would acquire pets during the holidays whether shelters were open or not, and if the shelters were not open, people would be forced to adopt pets elsewhere. Throughout his 30 years in animal welfare, Mike knew that pet adoption centers must run their organizations as a business in order to sustain themselves while saving the lives of pets in their care. Closing their doors during the holiday season definitely did not fit with Mike's idea of best business practices. Determined to change the tide, Mike set out to uncover his next "marketing plan".
In a matter of weeks, Mike invited 14 pet adoption agencies from all of San Diego County to Helen Woodward Animal Center to discuss a new idea that could change the fate of many orphaned pets. Mike introduced his colleagues to his new program titled Home 4 the Holidays. The program, as Mike explained, would partner all of the pet adoption agencies in San Diego, in a concerted effort to raise awareness for their pets and drive traffic into their adoption centers. Mike wanted to prove that these organizations would have a greater voice in numbers through collaboration, and that his business approach to animal welfare resulted in increased adoptions.
Soon after Mike had the San Diego shelters on board, he immediate contacted his friends at the Iams Company. He introduced the folks at Iams to his plan and explained that the group of organizations could not execute the plan without their financial assistance and resources. The program fit perfectly with Iams' mission to enhance the lives of pets, so they confirmed their partnership.
Home 4 the Holidays partnered 14 organizations in San Diego with award-winning actress Diane Keaton and found homes for 2,563 orphaned pets in 1999. The program leveraged the public relations of the 14 organizations in addition to a Home 4 the Holidays How-to Guide to ensure they were all communicating the same message. The word spread and by the program's second year, Home 4 the Holidays joined 132 organizations throughout the region to find homes for 19,992 orphaned pets. Mike was witnessing his vision come to life before his eyes. The program continued to grow in participation over the next few years, and the Helen Woodward Animal Center - Iams team wanted to grow the awareness accordingly.
In 2004, Iams assigned their PR agency and department (out of the home office in Dayton, OH) to Home 4 the Holidays in order to increase the awareness of the program. That year, Home 4 the Holidays also experienced more than 300,000 adoptions, including its longest distance adoption by reuniting Lava (an Iraqi puppy rescued during the Battle of Fallujah) with Jay Kopelman (the marine that rescued him) in San Diego. Jay Kopelman captured the journey in his book From Baghdad with Love.
Iams Home 4 the Holidays 2005 brought continued growth and success with nearly 2,000 pet adoption centers finding homes for more than 328,000 orphaned pets, surpassing the program's one millionth adoption. Like all of the Home 4 the Holidays adoptions, the honorary one millionth adoption had a story connected. Lucky Chai was a kitten that survived a 60mile trip in the engine compartment of a car. The driver discovered him and surrendered him to a shelter that rehabbed him back to health. Thanks to awareness driven by Home 4 the Holidays, Lucky Chai was adopted and represented the program's one millionth pet adoption.
Iams Home 4 the Holidays has helped find homes for more than 2 million orphaned pets since 1999. The campaign hopes to find homes for one million pets in 2008, celebrating the 10th anniversary. This year, award-winning actress and pet parent Felicity Huffman has teamed up with Iams Home 4 the Holidays and the 3,000 participating pet adoption organizations. Together, they encourage people to participate by experiencing the joy of pet adoption, volunteering, or donating to help orphaned pets this holiday season. People can learn more about all the ways to get involved in pet adoption by visiting www.iamshome4theholidays.com.

As the notion of companion animals evolves, pets continue to play a more centered role in the family. For many couples, their pet may be their first "baby." But how do you prepare your favorite four-legged friend for the newest two-legged addition to the family?
Linda Case is an adjunct assistant professor who teaches companion animal behavior and training at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana. She also owns Autumn Gold Dog Training Center, in Mahomet and has authored several books including one due out this summer entitled Canine and Feline Behavior and Training: A Complete Guide to Understanding Our Two Best Friends.
"Basic manners training is especially helpful when a new baby is going to be added to the home," says Case. She says that teaching your dog the down and stay commands before the baby arrives is a good start to a well-mannered pet that will be calm around infants. She also recommends teaching your pet to "come when called, sit quietly for petting and handling, and to keep four paws on the ground."
With these commands in your dog's repertoire you'll be more apt to keep things under control when you bring the baby home. However even new parents have a hard time preparing themselves for the jolting cries infants can produce, so imagine how stressful that sound might be to an unsuspecting animal.
For this reason, it is recommended that you expose your pet to infant cries long before it hears the real thing by use of a CD of baby noises. Case explains that, "owners can play the CD very softly and as soon as an unusual sound occurs, the dog is given several high value treats."
Although exposing your pet to sounds of babies is helpful, Case says, "It is important to realize that dogs' primary special sense is olfactory." Because of this, the Humane Society of the United States recommends that you have a friend or relative bring a blanket with the new baby's scent on it home for the dog to smell prior to the baby coming home.
Along that same train of thought, it is also a good idea to allow your pooch to smell and investigate all the baby gear you buy and put together long before the baby arrives. You do not have to go so far as to take your pet for a ride in that new stroller, but at least let it get used to the new items.
When you come home from the hospital with your new bundle of joy, remember that you have been gone for several days and your pet will be excited to see you. It is a good idea to spend a few minutes alone with the new older brother or sister before you introduce it to the new baby.
As a final word of advice Case reminds new moms and dads that "a dog should never be left unattended with an infant or small child." She also recommends keeping your pet's daily routine the same both before and after the baby arrives, as abrupt changes will only make the situation more stressful.

existence and history of the cat.
THE COLLECTION

(On loan from the private collection of Karen Lawrence)
NEEDS
The Foundation, like it's counterpart The Dog Museum of America, has as it's mandate "the collection, preservation and exhibition of works of art and literature related to the cat." Each passing year sees more material destroyed because breeders and their heirs do not consider it as having value or interest. We welcome the opportunity to make that determination.
What are we looking for? Many of us have
collected cat memorabilia over the years. Some valuable, very valuable only
to us. Works of art, paintings, sculptures and other cat collectibles
(ceramic cats, cats as toys, cats at Christmas and other festivals, wooden,
metal, glass cats, and cats in advertising are a few examples) are all needed
to build a comprehensive collection of cat artifacts.
In each future issue of Fanc-e-Mews, we will showcase a particular piece from the foundation's collection. If you are interested in contributing to the history of the cat fancy maintained by the CFA Foundation, please email CFA at cfa@cfa.org

Petmate Litter Catcher Mat
by Carol Krzanowski
The use of clumping litter has its advantages, but I have always disliked the way the litter is so easily tracked all over the floor by the cats. Our wood floors always seemed gritty as a result, even with constant sweeping and vacuuming. In my quest to find a solution, I have used throw rugs under the litter boxes to help control the tracking somewhat. I have also tried some of the litter mats on the market but always felt they were rather ineffective.
Recently I had an opportunity to try the Petmate Litter Catcher Mat. I have to admit I was skeptical about how well it would work, but as it turned out, this mat does keep tracking to a minimum by collecting most of the fine litter from the cats’ paws. The mat is made of vinyl-like material with a solid, non-slip backing and soft tufts on the top that catch the stray litter as the cats walk across it. The Petmate Litter Catcher Mat can easily be vacuumed or taken outdoors to shake out the collected litter. The biggest question in my mind, though, was whether the tufted construction would make it difficult to clean and disinfect. I was quite surprised to find that it is fairly easy to clean, as the tufts shift and move around as they are scrubbed, enabling all surfaces to be thoroughly cleaned.
I think that the Petmate Litter Catcher Mat does a great job. In fact, I am so pleased with it that I plan on purchasing additional mats for use throughout the house.
Editor’s Note: More information about Petmate’s line of litter mats can be found at www.petmate.com.

Kitty "Box"-ing Day
by Betsy Stowe
|
Christmas is the time of year
When humans go insane-
Rushing, wrapping, hiding gear,
And never time for games.
They bring trees right inside the house
But never let us climb,
Hang shiny, dangling objects out
We're not supposed to find!
So cats must make our own good fun,
Ignoring normal rules,
And claiming for our own the one
Thing cast aside by fools!
Paper, boxes, bags, and bows-
Amusement park for cats!
To shred, to hide, to take a roll
Sounds like a mousie's scratch!
Colored, crackly paper sheets…
I must untie this knot!
This pile was one a single piece.
My kingdom for a box!
Then finally attention runs
Back to its rightful place.
Festivities are overcome
By my too gorgeous face!
I make them laugh. 'Don't even care
That they forgot my treat.
Admit it, felines have the flair
To make Christmas complete.

Yeowww! Stinkies Catnip Sardines win industry magazine’s 2008 “Editors’ Choice” Award
Award is second this year for popular catnip toy line
MINNEAPOLIS - Yeowww! Stinkies Catnip Sardines, made by DuckyWorld Products, Inc., won the coveted 2008 “Editors’ Choice” award from Pet Product News International, the industry’s leading trade magazine. The catnip-stuffed fish in the unique sliding-top sardine tin package was among the magazine’s top picks from hundreds of new pet products submitted this year.
“Yeowww! Stinkies Catnip Sardines are catnip toys that are very clever in design in packaging,” the magazine noted. “Three multicolored toy fish measuring more than 3 inches long are filled to the gills with [Yeowww!®] organically grown catnip. Pet owners needn’t worry if their wild and crazy kitties tear into these toys because they come with a nifty boutique-style, sliding-top tin, which can be used to store the toys. Impulse purchasers may have a hard time resisting.”
Three different Stinkies come in each tin. And in addition to the innovative reusable sardine tin, they’re also available in a “school of 51” fish, packaged in a point-of-sale jug.
“There’s nothing fishy about why we won this award,” says Kevin Duck, Founder and Creative Director of DuckyWorld Products. “We knew this was a keeper as soon as we designed the tin. A cool sardine tin full of organically grown catnip fish. What more could a cat—or a cat owner—want? And at just 3 inches long, they’re the purrrfect appetizer for any feline’s fancy.”
Winning awards has become somewhat of a habit at DuckyWorld this year. In February, DuckyWorld won a Best In Show award in the Global Pet Expo 2008 New Product Showcase for its eye-catching Yeowww! Catnip Point-of-Sale Display Rack. The rack holds 12 of Yeowww!’s many toys, creating a catnip toy section that causes repeat sales. Global Pet Expo is one of the pet industry’s annual trade show expositions.
“I feel very fortunate, says Duck. This will be our 5th award in 10 years. Not something you see coming from other catnip companies.”
With an unbeatable G-PEP (Guaranteed Product Exchange Program) 60-day return policy, Yeowww! Catnip toys are sold at finer pet stores, gift shops, boutiques, and animal centers throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe and Asia. Visit their website at www.duckyworld.com to see the full Yeowww! Catnip product line, email info@duckyworld.com or call DuckyWorld Headquarters in Minneapolis at (866)-4 YEOWWW (866-493-6999).
Catnip toys that ACTUALLY work!®
About DuckyWorld Products, Inc.
DuckyWorld works exclusively with private farmers to grow 100 percent organically grown catnip. We follow our crop very closely with personal visits to the fields from seed to harvest. After harvest, we cure it and mill it to our specifications. What we end up with is the highest quality catnip we can produce based on freshness, color and aroma. No chemicals or pesticides are used in cultivation. No cotton fillers, no plastic pieces for shaping, and certainly none of that cheaper “toy grade” catnip. Every toy is 100% stuffed full of 100% Yeowww! organically grown catnip—up to two ounces depending on the toy. Our toys are sold by “fullness”; not by weight. We can do this because we hand-make each toy right here in the USA. These are just a few of the reasons more cat lovers have told us we have “Catnip Toys that actually work”!
