AUGUST - CFA Disaster Relief Dontes Funds
AUGUST: Hurricane Charley, FloridaCharley, a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 miles per hour, hit the west coast of Florida on Friday, August 13, 2004. The hurricane had been predicted to make landfall in the Tampa Bay area, but turned suddenly and came inland further south in the Punta Gorda area. As evacuation warnings had been concentrated in the Tampa area, residents near Charlotte Harbor received minimal evacuation time. Charley left a path of destruction across the state - from the west coast where it made landfall and through the Orlando area before heading out to sea near Daytona Beach. Florida has the best organized state animal rescue and relief for animals in disaster than any other state. The Florida DART teams are assessing the need for various services - such as sheltering, etc. - and those assessments will be completed by the afternoon of Sunday, August 15th. They will set up what is needed, and call in additional disaster organizations as needed. UPDATE: Sunday, August 15, 3:42pm - CFA's Disaster Relief Team and Code 3 Associates have been asked to provide assistance and will be heading to Florida. There is a shelter that still has power in Englewood, FL. Shelter personnel are transferring the shelter animals to other shelters in order to take in rescues. Pet supply companies have been notified and we should have everything from hamster to horse and cattle feed available on short notice. UPDATE: August 26 - CFA's Disaster Relief Team was originally in Bartow, FL, working alongside the NEW EARs group from United Animal Nations. They were providing excellent sheltering considering the circumstances. We then moved to Wauchula, FL to set up a mobile vet clinic north of Arcadia. Many of the storm related injuries are actually caused by heat - a dog came in with a 110 temp - and was saved. A sweet little kitten had to have her back left foot amputated due to a crushing injury. The Humane Society of Polk County had its roof collapse in the cattery during the storm........fortunately they lost no cats. We are overwhelmed, yet again, by the generous donations to the CFA Disaster Relief Fund. Thank you ever so much. We're looking seriously into helping the Humane Society of Polk County with its new cattery so they can again take cats in for adoption.
