Featured Breed: Bombay

The Bombay is a hybrid breed created by breeding a sable Burmese with a black American Shorthair. The result is a medium sized cat with substantial boning and muscle development, a sleek, close lying, glossy black coat and luminous gold to copper eyes. The Bombay is an outgoing, friendly cat with a loving personality, who is comfortable with other cats, dogs and children.

Music for Cats

A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science suggests that cats would rather have music that is created for them and fits into their method of communication, rather than human music.


Stow-a-way Cat Found Thanks to Microchip

Kevin, the stow-a-way cat went missing from his home in South Carolina and was found two years later and 2,000 miles away from home near the Arizona-California border... all thanks to a microchip which identified his owner!


Featured Breed: Birman

The Birman is a semi-longhaired cat with a medium size, stocky body. It’s a color pointed cat with four distinctive white feet, which are known as “gloves.” The Birman has a moderate head type with large blue eyes and a silky, non-matting coat. The Birman is gentle and playful with a true affection for its owner.

Amur Leopard

According to a report by the World Wildlife Fund, the Amur leopard, which is indigenous to southeastern Russia and parts of northeastern China, has doubled in population since 2007. The number of leopards has doubled from 30 to 57. It is a good sign that populations are being monitored for these endangered species.


Life of Cats Exhibit

If you live in or are visiting New York, you will want to see the Life of Cats: Selections from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Collection illustrates the connection between cats and the Japanese people. Depictions of cats are found in ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo Period (1615-1867). The exhibition is divided into five sections: Cats and People, Cats as People, Cats versus People, Cats Transformed and Cats and Play. Roughly 50 items will be replaced with new works halfway through Life of Cats—Rotation 1 will be on view from March 13 until April 26; Rotation 2 will be on view from April 29 until June 7.

Featured Breed: Balinese

The Balinese is a semi-longhaired variant of the Siamese and was named for the graceful dancers of Bali. Initially accepted in the four colors and patterns associated with the Siamese, the Javanese Division includes the lynx (tabby) point and tortie point patterns, as well as additional point colors such as red and cream.

The Abyssinian is a slender, shorthaired breed, with a ticked coat pattern, like that of squirrels, rabbits and wild cats. One of the oldest breeds, it comes in red, ruddy, blue and fawn. Abyssinians are alert, intelligent, very people-oriented and have been known to train their owners to play with them.

99 Lives Cat Genome Sequencing Initiative Goal is to Improve Feline Health

Through the 99 Lives Cat Genome Project, cats will have the same health care opportunity as other animals. In an effort to better understand cat health issues, the project looks at genetic conditions of cat diseases such as asthma and obesity so that better treatments can be administered. A side benefit of the project is that it has provided insight about human eye diseases.
