Companion Animal Recovery![]() The Cat Fanciers' Association is now in partnership with AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR)! AKC CAR was founded in 1995 to help reunite lost pets with their owners. With this goal in mind, AKC Companion Animal Recovery provides 24-hour recovery services for pets that are identified with a microchip, tattoo, or AKC CAR collar tag. AKC CAR, located in Raleigh, NC, is an affiliate of the American Kennel Club and is the nation's largest non-profit recovery service provider. CFA has a guidance statement on microchipping as an identification system for cats and encourages lifetime enrollment with the AKC CAR program to provide the best protection for your cat. Enroll your microchipped cat, using the AKC CAR enrollment form, and you can have some peace of mind when it comes to the chances of recovery. Once part of the AKC CAR program, their global database will link your selected contact names, addresses, and telephone numbers to your pet’s unique identification number. All animals are eligible for enrollment in AKC CAR regardless of identification brand or type, microchip, tattoo or AKC CAR collar tag. The newly designed AKC CAR database stores nearly 3 million enrollment records and has been used to perform nearly 300,000 recoveries. Although dogs make up the majority of the database, cats, horses, birds, and 31 other companion and exotic species are enrolled. AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) is a not-for-profit organization and affiliate of the American Kennel Club. AKC CAR is the nation’s largest non-profit recovery service provider and is working in partnership with the CFA to ensure that as many cats as possible are returned to their owners, if lost.
AKC CAR’s primary goal is to help an owner stay connected for life with their companion animal. AKC CAR provides recovery services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and historically has reunited an owner with their lost pet every 7 minutes. We invite you to join us in our ongoing efforts to reunite owners with their lost pets. These are some of the ways that you can help:
