Colin Powell Visits the State Department
CFA's Cat of the Year, GC, BW, NW Caricature's Colin Powell, travelled to Washington, DC on Friday, August 13th, and visited the State Department offices to meet the person he is named after, none other than Secretary of State Colin Powell himself. Secretary Powell and his wife, Alma, graciously welcomed Colin Powell, a Bombay male named after the Secretary of State, to the State Department. Accompanying Colin Powell, the cat, for the visit was his breeder, Sig Hauck, and the President of CFA, Pam DelaBar. Ms. DelaBar, Lieutenant Colonel (retired, US Army), was in Forces Command when General Powell commanded Forces Command and has briefed him in the past. On this visit, she presented Secretary Powell with a CFA rosette for being "BEST". During the formal photo op in the prestigious Treaty Room, Secretary Powell cuddled Colin Powell, the cat, closely, while introducing him to a very receptive and interested press corps. Secretary Powell said, " .. one of the benefits of him visiting with us today is they said that I would have the privilege of naming one of his sons, a son that was born on July 4th, I think. And so I have decided that, with your permission, ma'am, sir, we would like to name Colin's son in honor of a great American who has a connection to the cause of peace and to the State Department and somebody who was a great prizewinner in his own right, the first black American to receive a Nobel Peace Prize, Ralph Bunche." After the "official" photo op, the cat Colin Powell made himself right at home in the State Department offices, exploring almost every nook and cranny on his own, and visiting personally with several members of the press corps.
