CFA Clerking ProgramA Ring Clerk is the second most important person in a judging ring. Usually seated at the end of the judging table, the Ring Clerk acts as an interface between the Judge and the exhibitors, and manages the operation of the ring under the Judge's direction. The Ring Clerks supervise the stewards in cleaning the judging cages; put up the ring numbers and call up and send back the cats to be judged; and mark a catalog as the judge hangs the ribbons and rosettes indicating his or her awards. Ring Clerks then check the Judge's awards sheets for agreement with the catalog as marked by the Ring Clerks and resolve any discrepancies with the Judge. Each show also must have a Master Clerk to consolidate the awards from the Judge's sheets for all of the rings into a master catalog and checks the Judge's sheets for completeness and accuracy. One of the two main functions of the Master Clerk is to detect any mechanical errors made by a Judge and resolve them with the Judge before the Judge leaves the ring. The Master Clerk also makes authorized corrections requested by exhibitors in the master catalog, which is the official record of the show sent to the Central Office, and determines and announces to the exhibitors the count of the various categories of kittens and cats actually present and competing at the show.
